The Institute of Medical Psychology, Psycho-Oncology and Psychosomatics was officially established in 2026 as an independent organisation with a public-benefit purpose.
The Institute is the result of years of clinical practice, scientific work, teaching activity, psychotherapeutic expertise and professional collaboration among specialists who share a common understanding of the place of mental health in contemporary medicine.
For more than two decades, the members of the team have worked with patients, their families and medical professionals in some of the largest healthcare institutions in Bulgaria, developed new models of psychosocial support, trained professionals and taken part in national and international scientific initiatives.
The idea of establishing the Institute arose naturally as the next step in the development of this community of professionals. The accumulated practical experience revealed the need for a place that would bring together clinical practice, science, training and civic engagement into a single platform for the development of medical psychology, psycho-oncology, psychosomatics and mental health.
Behind the Institute stand specialists of diverse professional backgrounds, united by a common philosophy.
Clinical psychologists, psychotherapists, psychoanalysts, public health specialists, clinical social workers and university lecturers bring together their expertise around the conviction that quality medical care cannot be complete without attention to the psychological, social and emotional dimensions of illness.
From its very foundation, the Institute has set itself the task of being more than a professional organisation.
Our aim is to build a bridge between science and clinical practice, between medical professionals and patients, between education and the real needs of the healthcare system.
We work towards establishing evidence-based approaches, developing professional standards, creating new models of psychosocial support and encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration.
We believe that the future of medical psychology and psycho-oncology belongs to integrated models of care, in which the physician, the psychologist, the psychotherapist, the clinical social worker and other specialists work as a single team in the interest of the patient. It is precisely this philosophy that has guided the Institute's development since its founding and will continue to be a leading principle in its work.
